Parti af Finkongkjeilen

Tromholt skriver: Finkongkjeilen, where I went ashore for a few hours, is the very pattern of a Finnmarken fishing village. In three sides it is encircled by grerat mountains, so lofty that only in the morning is the sun able to throw somerays into this cul-desac in the rock, where the snow even at this season still lies in some places in large drifts down to the shore. Everything else is fish, or related to fish. Live fish, dead fish, dried fish, cured fish, fishheads, fish-entrails, smell fo fish, stink of fish, vessels which bring fish, and vessels which fetch fish, people who buy fish, people who only live on fish, only speak, think and dream of fish - nothing else. The village boasts, in the way of dweillings, a trading station, and a considerable number of little huts principially inhabited by Sea samis. The pyramidel piles seen in this place are characteristic of such fishing marts, being formed of the long, narrow poles on which the fish hung to dry. If there be many of these piles the prospects are not good, as they indicate scarcity of fish. Fra "Under the Rays of the Aurora Borealis, vol 2" av Sophus Tromholt (1885).
